The good stuff

The art style is genuinely charming - like if a Saturday morning cartoon from the 90s got remastered with modern lighting and a touch of whimsy. The levels are packed with personality, and each dimension has its own vibe. One level’s underwater with jellyfish-shaped enemies, another’s floating in zero-G with a jazz soundtrack. I actually laughed out loud when I first saw the boss in the “Gumdrop Dimension” - a giant candy cane with eyes and a mustache. The spell mechanics are satisfying too. Being able to switch between fire, ice, and wind mid-jump adds real depth to combat. And the double-jump + magic bubble defense combo? That saved me more than once during tough platforming sections. Co-op with a friend is a blast too - we were both screaming at the screen during the final phase of the lava boss.

The not-so-good

But man, the tutorial is… not great. I spent ten minutes just trying to figure out how to use the broom. There’s no proper explanation for status effects either - one moment I’m fine, next I can’t jump, and the game doesn’t tell me why. It’s frustrating. And yeah, some levels start to feel repetitive. You’re dodging lasers, jumping over pits, and fighting the same type of enemy three times in a row. Worse, if you fail on the final level, you have to restart from the very beginning of the world. No checkpoint system beyond the last boss. That’s brutal. Controls also feel sluggish sometimes - especially when trying to land precise jumps. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it makes the game feel less tight than it could be. The story? Barely there. Bobby and Penny show up, get trapped, fight bosses. That’s it. No character development, no emotional stakes.

If you’re into quirky 2D platformers and don’t mind a few hiccups, Enchanted Portals - Download for Xbox-series-x-s is worth a try. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun when it works. Skip it if you hate games that punish you for failing late in the game or if you need hand-holding. For casual players who enjoy charm over polish, it’s a solid pick.
